Freedom of Information, or lack thereof

Our country was founded by men who understood the inherently evil nature of government, any government, and they intended for a free and powerful news press to keep the owners of the government apprised of what was being done in their name. Unfortunately, the mainstream domestic press and TV media today are but organs of the state. CNN International airs raw footage of innocents killed and maimed by the wars being conducted in our name, but CNN USA dare not; Newsweek's Europe, Asia, and Latin America covers have a purported Talibani fighter with the bi-line "Losing Afghanistan" while the Newsweek USA cover has a picture of a photographer I've never heard of.

So I ask myself the following questions: Would we be better off with CNN International airing domestically rather than (or in addition to) the airbrushed, blondized excuse of a news network we have now? Yes. Would we be better off with Newsweek issuing magazine covers that are as relevant to us as they are to the rest of the world to which they are relegated? And the point of the night: Would we be better off with Al Jazeera English available as an option to US Cable TV and Satellite customers? The answer is a resounding YES.

Jeebus

Tucker Carlson's show on MSNBC has Rep. Tom Tancredo babbling about border control. The problem? The screen keeps showing "Rep. Tom Tancredo (D) Colorado"

For those who don't recall, this is the same Tancredo who advocated the nuclear bombing of Mecca in retaliation to terrorist attacks.

For those who don't know, Liberty University is Jerry Falwell's Evangelical Higher Institute of Learning. For more information, www.liberty.edu and yes, they do get their own .edu, I don't know how.

Chafee for Rhode Island

Along with Bolton's nomination, Bush said he would like to move forward on legislation to retroactively authorize the National Security Agency's domestic surveillance program.
Bush said he would like to see action on both issues before year's end. The Democratic-controlled Congress begins its term in January.
But Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee, who was defeated in this week's election, said he would block Bolton's nomination.
Chafee, a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, told reporters that he did not believe Bolton's nomination would move forward without his support.
"The American people have spoken out against the president's agenda on a number of fronts, and presumably one of those is on foreign policy," the Rhode Island moderate told The Associated Press.
"And at this late stage in my term, I'm not going to endorse something the American people have spoke out against."

I'm actually just a little bit sad that Senator Chafee lost. He did very little wrong while he was in office, he even voted against the War in Iraq at a time when Democrats were falling all over each other in trying to support the President's agenda. But the one thing Chafee didn't have going for him was the big R next to his name, the R that America has spoken out against in this election. Therefore, I was glad to hear yesterday that Chafee's party loyalties may shift. If so, I would love to see a Democratif Chafee run for Governor of Rhode Island in 2010.

Majority Leader Reid

Senator Macacawitz just conceded. He actually sounded pseudo-genuine, it was surprising. In any case, we haven't seen the last of him, he's going to file papers with the FEC soon.

Subpoena Power

It has scared Rumsfeld. http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/11/08/rumsfeld.ap/index.html

Wow

Our folks are going to get control of both houses in January. Let's hope they show some spine and start doling out subpoenas and impeachment talk.
