Freedom of Information, or lack thereof

Our country was founded by men who understood the inherently evil nature of government, any government, and they intended for a free and powerful news press to keep the owners of the government apprised of what was being done in their name. Unfortunately, the mainstream domestic press and TV media today are but organs of the state. CNN International airs raw footage of innocents killed and maimed by the wars being conducted in our name, but CNN USA dare not; Newsweek's Europe, Asia, and Latin America covers have a purported Talibani fighter with the bi-line "Losing Afghanistan" while the Newsweek USA cover has a picture of a photographer I've never heard of.

So I ask myself the following questions: Would we be better off with CNN International airing domestically rather than (or in addition to) the airbrushed, blondized excuse of a news network we have now? Yes. Would we be better off with Newsweek issuing magazine covers that are as relevant to us as they are to the rest of the world to which they are relegated? And the point of the night: Would we be better off with Al Jazeera English available as an option to US Cable TV and Satellite customers? The answer is a resounding YES.
