I just called Time Warner Cable to cancel my RoadRunner internet service. The first question the system asked me was "press 1 for english", i press 1. Then it says 1 for this, 2 for this, 3, and 4 for canceling service. I press 4. I wait around for 10 minutes. An agent comes, start speaking in Spanish. I think to myself okay, maybe I pressed 2 instead of 1 at the language prompt, but nonetheless I'm peeved, so I ask the agent "Why are you speaking in Spanish instead of English?". The agent doesn't reply to my question, instead says please hold on, and transfers me to some number. Turns out he's basically re-directed my call to the main number. So I go through the process again. Press 1 for English. Press 4 for cancellation. Another agent starts speaking in Spanish. By this time I am royally annoyed, so I keep saying "ENGLISH PLEASE ENGLISH PLEASE", this agent is a little more intelligent. He starts speaking in English and takes care of service cancellation.
I am no xenophobe. I came to this country when I was 11 years old. I've traveled the World more than most people will in their lifetimes. I think there is no place for any language other than English when it comes to conducting business in this country. Of course, I cannot tell businesses what language they should use to communicate with customers, but at least when they realize that this issue is as sensitive as it is, PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ENGLISH-SPEAKING AGENTS WHEN WE SPECIFY ENGLISH. WE STILL LIVE IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA DAMMIT!!
